Obituary for Clair R. Turnbaugh


Clair R. Turnbaugh, 90, of Tyrone died Thursday November 19, 2015 at UPMC, Altoona.

He was born February 21, 1925 in Tyrone a son of Clair and Ruth (Meredith) Turnbaugh. He was twice married first to E. Charleen Snyder on August 29, 1950. She died October 21, 1971. He then married Nancy McCloskey on July 3, 1975 in Altoona.

Surviving are his wife, three sons, Gary and wife MaryAnn of Mechanicsburg, Craig and wife Alverda of Denver, Chris and wife Kathy of Altoona, five grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, a step-daughter Tammera Gondek and husband Richard of Morrisdale, a sister Harriet Penman of Columbus, Ohio and an aunt Helen Meredith of Tyrone.

On June 19, 1947 Clair was hired at Chicago Rivet and Machine Company, Tyrone. He was the first hired in the machine shop as a machinist and tool maker. He worked there for 40 years and retired on April 1, 1987.

He was a member and past Commander of the Howard Gardner American Legion, Post # 281, Tyrone and had been past District Deputy Commander for the 21st District comprising of Blair and Bedford counties. He was also a member of VFW, Post #4559, Tyrone, Historical Construction Equipment Association and the Pennsylvania Railroad Technical and Historical Society. He had been an athletic officer for Legion baseball and was on the honor roll of the Tyrone Sportsman.

Clair was a U.S. Navy veteran of WWII serving as a Machinist Mate with the South Pacific 20th U.S.N.Seabees.

Clair had various nicknames including, Nobby, Jr., Nick and Big Daddy. He was an avid train collector.

Funeral services will be held Saturday December 5, 2015 at 11 A.M. at Feller Memorial Home. Friends will be received on Thursday December 4, 2015 at the funeral home from 6 to 8 P.M. and an hour before the services on Saturday. The Tyrone Honor Guard will be provide veteran honors for the service.

In lieu of flowers you can send contributions in his name to the Blind or Diabetes Association or to the James E. Van Zandt Veterans Hospital, Altoona.
