Obituary for Verden H. Latchford Sr.

Verden H. Latchford Sr., 80, of Tyrone died Wednesday December 27, 2017 at Tyrone Hospital.

He was born April 9, 1937 in Altoona, a son of Harvey David and Elva (Weld) Latchford. On November 28, 1959 at Grace United Methodist Church, Lewistown he married Edith Ingram. She died October 16, 2008.

Surviving are two daughters Sheila Taylor of Indio, California, Shari Latchford of Tyrone, four sons, Verden Jr. and wife Lynette of Pinecroft, Kevin and wife Lisa of Riggles Gap, Ardean and wife Robin of Tyrone, Bill and wife Jennie of Tyrone, sixteen grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren,, two sisters, Orvieda Smith of Thompsontown, Cleda Rose of Sunbury and three brothers Ardean D. of Newport News, Virginia, Gail of Lewistown and William of Melbourne, Florida. He was preceded in death by a granddaughter Erika and two brothers Lloyd and Darvin.

Mr. Latchford retired in 2007 from the Tyrone Borough Highway Department as Highway Superintendent following 40 years service.

He was the founder of the Tyrone Youth Football League and was a member of the Tyrone Hookies.

He was an Air Force Veteran from 1955-1958 with service on Eniwetok Island in the South Pacific.

Verden enjoyed Tyrone athletics and watching his grandchildren playing sports. He was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers and Nascar fan.

Friends will be received at the Feller Memorial Home on Friday from 6 to 8 P.M. Interment will be at Logan Valley Cemetery.
