Obituary for Mary Phyllis Johnson

Mary P. “Phyllis” Johnson, 88 of Tyrone died Tuesday February 11, 2014 at Epworth Manor.

She was born March 15, 1925 in Johnstown a daughter Modestus and Thelma (Bradley) Wirtner. On June 10, 1947 in Phoenix City he married Robert H. Johnson. He died April 2, 2008.

Surviving are 2 sons Steven and wife Arden of Atlanta, Georgia, David of Tyrone, 3 grandchildren, Amanda, Andrew and Michael Johnson and many nieces, nephews and friends. She was preceded in death by a daughter Mary Theresa, a brother Richard and a sister Betty.

She was a member of St. Matthew Catholic Church, the Catholic Daughters of America, Court St. Rita, the church choir, Allegheny Chorale and was former officer and volunteer for the Tyrone Snyder Public Library.

During WWII she worked for the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard and at John R. Wald Company. She also had been employed at the Villa Restaurant, Tyrone and had been a reading tudor for St. Matthew School.

Phyllis had a cheerful spirit that was a shining light to many. She faced all of life’s obstacles with strength, kindness and brave toughness. She was from the Greatest Generation, working in the defense industry during World War II and supporting her husband, Bob, and family after the war in duty stations across 3 continents. Every journey always led Phyllis and Bob back to Tyrone. They were connected by generations to the community that embraced Phyllis six years after Bob died. She loved her sons and her grandchildren very much. Phyllis was loved by many and will be missed by everyone who knew her.

Funeral Mass will be held Saturday February 15, 2014 at St. Matthew Church with Fr. Jozef Kovacik Celebrant. Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery. Friends will be received at the Feller Memorial Home on Friday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 P.M. Recitation of the Rosary will be held on Friday at 7:30 P.M.
